Home Remedies for A Sudden Toothache

You are out and about enjoying the day when all of a sudden… a toothache strikes. What do you do? Well, first you will need to visit your dentist in Brandon right away. However, until you visit their dental clinic near you, you will want to use the following home remedies to provide you with some temporary relief.

Saltwater Rinse

One of the most effective strategies you can take until you can be seen by your dentist is making a saltwater rinse. So how do you do it? You will want to begin with eight ounces of water, and half a teaspoon of table salt. Take a gulp of this mixture, and swish it in your mouth, just make sure to spit it out. Additionally, reach for a string of floss and weave it around the tooth causing you pain to eliminate any residual food particles that may be trapped.

Over-the-counter Pain Relievers

If your child is experiencing a toothache, your dentist in Brandon will advise them to take acetaminophen. Adults, on the other hand, can choose from a range of over-the-counter medicines, such as ibuprofen instead. If you opt for aspirin, you will want to ensure that you actually swallow it, you should not apply the aspirin directly to your tooth or gums. This is just a folk remedy that could end up causing you more oral pain.

Cold Compress

Is your face swollen? You will want to grab an ice pack or cold compress and place it on your cheek. This can help ease any pain, especially when you have chipped your tooth or knocked it out. If you have swelling, it can also indicate an abscess (which is an accumulation of pus in the roots of your teeth). This can lead to a severe infection in your jaws and other teeth. Some of these signs include a fever and red gums.

Clove Oil

This is a natural remedy that helps to numb the pain of a toothache. All you need to do is rub the oil directly on the sore area, or soak it in a cotton ball and gently dab it against your tooth and gums. Clove oil can be just as effective as benzocaine, which most over-the-counter toothache gels contain as an ingredient.

Garlic

Take a clove of garlic and crush it. This motion releases allicin, now I know you are probably wondering what on earth is allicin? Well, it is a great oily liquid that fights against disease. You can try using garlic to relieve your pain, by simply chewing on a clove, or chopping it up and placing it on your tooth. This is a safer option; the only downside is you cannot expect your breath to smell very pleasant after. Don’t worry though, the only place you should be visiting at this point is your dental clinic in Brandon.

Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Here is another rinse idea for you, mix three percent hydrogen peroxide with equal parts of water and swish it around your mouth, be careful not to swallow it. Hydrogen peroxide is a pain and inflammation reliever, plus it can eliminate bacteria, reduce plaque and help heal gums that bleed.

Peppermint Tea Bags

Tea bags can be used to make tea but they also could be your best friend when it comes to relieving pain and soothing your sensitive gums. All you need to do is cool the tea bag before you apply it to the affected area, it should be slightly warm but not hot.

Vanilla Extract

This is a staple when it comes to baking, but do you know vanilla extract has alcohol in it? As you may know, alcohol can be used to numb pain and is proven to be an antioxidant. If you want to enjoy the effects, all you will need to do is dab a bit of vanilla extract onto your fingers or a cotton pad and apply the ingredient to the affected area a few times a day.

If you are experiencing a toothache, contact a dental clinic near you. Your dentist will be able to provide you with different dental services in Brandon.
